Khichidi recipe from Amma
August 27th, 2007KHICHDI (Mixed rice and lentils)
1 c. long grain rice
3/4 cup dhal , equal parts moong ( green gram) and channa dhal ( Bengal gram), mixed
4 whole cloves
1 inch piece cinnamon
1/4 tsp. turmeric powder
1 1/2 tsp. salt
2-3 green chillies or 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
3 tblsp. butter
1/2 cup frozen peas
4 cups water
Wash rice and dhals. Rinse in colander
Heat butter over medium heat till it melts.
Add cinnamon and cloves. Saute till fragrant
Add peas, rice and lentils/dhals. Saute for 2-3 minutes.
Add turmeric, chillies and salt.
Add water.
Bring to boil, stir, turn heat to low.
Cook 25-30 minutes.
(After adding water, can cook in microwave for 17 minutes. I don’t
recommend this)
Serve with raita.
